Background screening through Sterling, added to a membership so a member's completed check fulfils the requirement.
Must know
- Screening is a required attribute on a membership: the membership stays at Pending Requirements until the check is on file.
- A check can be refunded only while it's waiting on the candidate.
- Cancelling a check in Uplifter doesn't cancel it with Sterling. Uplifter's team contacts Sterling to do that.
- Available when Certification Tracking is active on your organization's account — ask your Uplifter account manager to add it. It's an add-on to Membership Manager.
Background screening through Sterling, a First Advantage company, added to a membership so a member's completed check fulfils the requirement. It runs on the Enterprise Portal, and the results sit on the member's profile rather than in a spreadsheet.
How a check works
- At purchase or renewal. If the member has no valid check on file, the background check is added to their cart with the membership. A check already on file that meets your dates completes the requirement, and nothing more is needed.
- Consent on Sterling's site. The member receives an invitation to complete their consent with Sterling: Sterling Backcheck in Canada, Sterling Volunteers in the US. They can also open it from My Profile under Background Checks.
- Result back on the profile. When Sterling finishes, the result lands on the member's profile and the requirement updates on its own.
- One season at a time. A check counts for a season when it was completed by that season's cut-off date. Uplifter sets up each season's screening record for you.
What admins can do from the dashboard
- Send to screening provider and Resend invite email — send the check again, or resend the member's invitation, without starting a new screening.
- Upload Manual Background Check — record a valid check done elsewhere, with a note, the cleared date and a document as proof.
- Background Checks on the member's profile — see each request's status and result: Green is clear, Red means Sterling has flagged it for your review, and Unknown means it's still in progress.
The most common snag is API Error - Email already in use. It usually means family members share one email address, so Sterling has seen it on another candidate. Confirm a different address with the member, update their profile and resend the request.
